What Is An Irish Pub?

"An excellent book!"

Principles
of quantitative development

Irish pubs have over the years developed a personality and character that is peculiar to the pubs in Ireland. Though each and every pub in Ireland is unique, there is an invisible characteristic that clearly marks them as Irish and is obvious to all as soon as they walk in.

What exactly this is, has been the subject of debate for many years now. I would contend that this characteristic is the atmosphere. Although there is a certain look common to many Irish pubs, they do not all have it. After all there must be a good reason that the Irish pubs around the world have Irish men and women running them. That reason is that the character of the pub is an extension of the character of the person running it and that cannot be copied by anyone else. An Irish pub must have an Irishman (or woman) running it.

Do you agree?

Gus O’Connor’s Pub established in 1832, is one of the most famous pubs in Ireland. The pub can be found in the heart of the picturesque village of Doolin, set amongst the rolling hills of West Clare, a stones throw from the Atlantic Ocean.

It opens at 10:30 each morning (12:30 on Sundays), Lunch starts at 12:00 and food is served all day, with last orders being taken at 21:30. The menu has a backbone of traditional Irish fare using fresh produce whether it be locally reared Irish beef or fish straight from the sea. Music sessions kick off around 9pm each evening during the summer and last till late.

When musicians get together to have a good time and make some music, it’s commonly known as a jam session. When the musicians are all Irish and playing traditional Irish instruments and music, it’s a seisiún. estabSeisiúns have their roots in the Ireland of old, taking place any time musicians gathered with their instruments, and anywhere they happened to gather – most commonly in pubs and kitchens across the country. Anyone can participate, or just sit back with their porter and enjoy the music.

An Tobar

The pub An Tobar is many people’s reckoning a typical Irish pub. A nice pub built in the traditional style with a wood floor and a range at one end to keep it warm in the winter. Parking is not a problem here in Spiddal as you can park on the street without the possibility of getting a ticket or being towed away as you might in the city.
